Into the Swamp: A Weekend at Pocomoke River State Park (And Why I’m Still Thinking About It)

There are places you visit that don’t feel like Maryland. And then there’s Pocomoke River State Park — which doesn’t even feel like this century.

There’s something ancient and quiet here. The air’s thick with cypress needles and stories. Spanish moss drapes low over the water like it’s got secrets. And if you’ve never seen a bald cypress swamp at golden hour? Add it to your list — because this place moves different.

So, where even is this?

Pocomoke River State Park straddles the lower Eastern Shore, tucked between Snow Hill and Pocomoke City. It’s about a 30-minute drive inland from Ocean City, but it feels like a totally different world. We’re talking dark water rivers, hidden trails, and forests that turn swampy when you least expect it.

The park is actually split into two main areas:

  • Shad Landing (on the south side of the river): This is where you’ll find the campground, kayak rentals, a pool, and a small nature center.
  • Milburn Landing (on the north side): Less infrastructure, more forest. Hikers, this is your side.

TL;DR — What to Do Here

  • Rent a kayak and paddle through the cypress swamp
  • Hike through pine forest that turns to swamp floor mid-trail
  • Camp at Shad Landing or Milburn (tent, RV, or cabins)
  • Watch the sunset from a canoe with zero sound except frogs and your paddle
  • Spot a prothonotary warbler and feel irrationally proud

Kayaking Through Time

If you only do one thing here, paddle Corker’s Creek. It’s off Shad Landing, and it feels like a secret corridor to another planet. Tannin-stained black water, neon-green duckweed, ancient trees twisted in all directions — and if you’re lucky, a heron will rise up in front of your kayak like a scene out of a movie.

Kayak and canoe rentals are available at the marina during the season. You can bring your own too — launch is super easy.

Pro Tip: The further you paddle from the marina, the quieter (and eerier) it gets. Bring water, bug spray, and your existential questions.

Camping Here? Oh Yeah.

Shad Landing Campground
Classic Maryland state park vibes: loop roads, fire pits, bathhouses, and big tall trees that make you feel tiny. There’s a camp store and even a pool (open Memorial Day through Labor Day). You’re also close to the kayak launch, which is a win.

We picked the Deer Run Loop and here is why: it is a loop with trails directly through it, backs to a ball field (perfect for star gazing and running the dog ragged) annnnnnd bathrooms. It is one of the only loops to have it’s own bathroom. We are hydrated girlies. We need a close bathroom for the middle of the night.

Other Random (But Useful) Notes

  • No service. Like, at all, unless you connect to wifi at the camp store.
  • Snakes are a thing. Most are harmless. Don’t panic, just give them space.
  • Buy firewood on site — they say — bring your own certified stuff. The firewood is damp AF and won’t give you a roaring flame.
  • Restrooms are clean. Showers too. But wear sandals you monster.
  • Super Dog Friendly – trails, docks, camp sites everywhere except the nature center our girl Uno was allowed to roam.
