A spontaneous morning in the city packed with culture, coffee, and hands-on fun.
There’s something magical about an unexpected day off from school. With no plans but plenty of energy, we decided to make the most of our location and head into DC for a quick, memory-filled family adventure.
Because we live close to a Metro stop, we ditched our usual plan of taking the MARC from Odenton (too many transfers, not enough return options) and instead drove just 30 minutes to New Carrollton. From there, we hopped on the Orange Line and rode straight to L’Enfant Plaza. Easy and efficient. In hindsight, we could have taken the MARC to New Carrollton, butI wasn’t on my second cup of coffee when we left the house so that didn’t cross my mind.
Here’s how we filled just a few hours in DC with incredible food, waterfront views, and one of the most interactive museums in the city—all before 2 PM.
Stop 1: Colada Shop at The Wharf
Address: 10 Pearl St SW, Washington, DC 20024
Our first destination was a surprise for my Cuban husband—Colada Shop at The Wharf. We had stumbled upon it once before while walking around the city without the kids, and ever since, he’s been waiting for a moment to return. This place instantly transported him to Florida Keys mornings with his abuelo, sipping Cuban coffee and sharing pastelitos.
What we ordered:
- Guava pastelitos (our kids were instant fans)
- Breakfast empanadas (crispy, savory, and satisfying)
- A Cuban sandwich (essential)
- Churro Waffles (literally drool worthy)
- Basic Breakfast sandwich (basic)
- Café con leche, with 1/4 sweetness (highly recommend)
Colada Shop delivers authentic Cuban flavor with a bright, colorful setting and quick service. Whether you’re there for a full meal or just a shot of strong espresso, this is a great spot to fuel up before a day of exploring.
Pro Tip: If you’re not already at The Wharf, there are other DC locations—including 14th Street and the Dupont Circle area. Check their locations page for the one closest to you.

A Stroll Through The Wharf
Fueled and caffeinated, we wandered around The Wharf—and wow, this area has transformed. If it’s been a while since you’ve visited, it’s worth a visit alone. New restaurants, boutique shops, waterfront seating, and open spaces make it a great pitstop for families. It’s equal parts urban and scenic, with just enough to entertain kids without overwhelming them. My kids liked the view of Reagan International for the flightpath alone.
Stop 2: International Spy Museum
Address: 700 L’Enfant Plaza SW, Washington, DC 20024
After walking back toward L’Enfant Plaza, we didn’t head down the Metro escalator. Instead, we made one last surprise detour: The International Spy Museum.
If you’re even mildly interested in espionage, cold war secrets, or the art of surveillance, this place is a must. As someone who loves reading about codebreakers and is a devoted fan of The Americans, I was in heaven.
Why it works for families:
- Tons of hands-on activities for kids (ours are 8 and 10, and it was perfect for them)
- Interactive missions and physical challenges throughout the museum
- Exhibits are presented at different heights and in accessible language for all ages
We wrapped up the visit with a stop at the gift shop, where the highlight was a pair of spyglasses that let you see behind you. My son only walked into a pole once while using them, which was far fewer times than I expected.
Pro Tip: Buy your tickets online ahead of time to guarantee your preferred entry time and avoid waiting.

Back Home by 2 PM
By early afternoon, we were back on the Metro and home in time for a late lunch. It was one of those simple, well-paced days that reminded me why we love where we live.
As someone who didn’t grow up near DC, the idea of just popping into world-class museums and eating pastries that taste like childhood memories on a weekday still feels surreal. DC used to be a big field trip event, reserved for special occasions and overnight buses. Now it’s just… part of our backyard.
