Short Stack: Forward Brewing

Your schedule is -miraculously- cleared for a Saturday afternoon. It’s about 60 degrees, with a warm Spring breeze, partly cloudy and you have a babysitter booked for 4 hours. What are you doing?

Do I have the ideal recipe for you: an early evening in Eastport. You will exceed your step goal for the day, sip on craft beer at Forward Brewing and consume delicious brewery food. All of this and more in one of the most attractive neighborhoods in Anne Arundel County. I think I might want to move here -and you might too- after this perfectly relaxing day.

First thing you must do is get street parking near Horn Point Park. From there, stroll a few blocks from the water view of the Severn to the water view of Spa Creek. As you walk along Chesapeake Avenue, you may also think to yourself that the neighborhood looks like a sprinkled donut. Gingerbread trim, pastels colors, picket fences and inviting front porches bring the charm.

You will also miss the turn and walk right past Fourth St. Don’t worry, make a loop around Severn and take in view of Annapolis Harbour. I thought perhaps I missed the casting call for the next Vineyard Vines commercial. I was grinning ear-to-ear; so many people happily strolling around too. You’re heading in the right direction when the smells from Lewnes’ and Boatyard get you drooling.

Breweries often follow suit of one another with darker tones and industrial finishes. It make sense and fits the bill. Forward Brewing breaks away from that standard with a white washed interior oak that I would enjoy in my own personal home. The space was chic, warm, bright with just a subtle hint of nautical. Inside doesn’t offer a lot of seating space, this is an indoor/outdoor atmosphere. The side windows open wide to let in the sea breeze. We snagged a spot inside because I’m a married grown woman with no one to impress. I was chilly and wanted to be near the food. Don’t @ me.

Silk Road, a Belgian Amber sounded scrumptious. I had a little zest of fruit but was generous on the Chai flavor, almost *spicy* – big fan and I hope it comes back. My husband had their stout, Dubh Dorcha, that was nitro poured (he was pretty stoked about that option) and the one sip I had of it was lovely also. Not too sweet, rather, a perfectly dry stout.

The food you should order, in order:

  1. potato wedges: with a smoked paprika aioli and chives that I may want to bathe in it was so good
  2. pretzel: duh, always have a pretzel with your beer, but try it with smoked gouda cheese sauce & beer mustard
  3. Cauliflower Tacos: to balance out the heavy starches, munch on buffalo cauliflower street tacos with cabbage slaw, and cilantro lime crema on corn tortillas

Once fully satiated, close out your tab and walk the Eastport bridge into downtown Annapolis. Enjoy the music on the street and the view of the water. Hug your partner with all the might you have and smile big. You just completed the recipe for a perfect Saturday afternoon.
